Children and Young People's Services

Children and FamiliesThe Children and Young People’s Trust in Buckinghamshire brings together the key partners in children and young people’s services across the county to oversee the drawing up and implementation of the Children and Young People’s Plan and to commission services to secure delivery of the objectives and targets.

The Children and Young People’s Plan sets out a number of priorities for improvement in Buckinghamshire:

  • Tackling under-achievement - raising children and young people’s attainment in and out of school.
  • Prevention - services that prevent children and young people from requiring high levels of intervention. In other words preventing problems from arising and staying safe.
  • Active lifestyles - providing children and young people with access to a broad range of services to meet their cultural and sporting needs.
  • Participation by children and young people – enabling them to have an active and real involvement in decision-making.

The Plan identifies the approach children and young people’s services in Buckinghamshire are taking with regard to implementation of the Children Act 2004 and how this links to other initiatives like Local Area Agreements, the National Service Framework (NSF) for Children, Young People and Maternity Services and Choosing Health: Making healthy choices easier. There is a long way to travel in terms of delivering the ECM agenda in Buckinghamshire and a great deal of progress has been made in a relatively short time such as a partnership approach, maintaining a child and young person focus and work on the five Outcomes:

  • Be healthy
  • Stay safe
  • Enjoy and achieve
  • Make a positive contribution
  • Achieve economic well-being

There is still more work to do in integrating services, workforce reform and joint commissioning. The re-structuring of services within the County Council to create the Children and Young People’s Services portfolio is one significant change aimed at ensuring that staff can effectively work together to improve outcomes for children and young people.

The over-riding strength which comes through very clearly is that we share a common binding moral purpose – we all want to do our best for the children and young people of Buckinghamshire. We are committed to ensuring widespread participation of children and young people and their families in helping us to design and deliver even better services, which will ensure all our young people have the best possible life chances.

These are exciting times for all of us who work with children, young people and their families and I have no doubt that the commitment, dedication and hard work of all partners will make Buckinghamshire an even better place for children and young people.

Sue Imbriano
Director of Children and Young People’s Services
